Do not, I repeat, do not get this coverage. They hide fees from you, make changes without your consent and will keep ALL of your money when you cancel. I got a quote, paid the downpayment and 4 days later found better, cheaper coverage. Contacted the general as I still had required paperwork that needed to be submitted and was told I would get a full refund. I got $15 back out of my $296 payment. For 13 days of coverage (because that's when they finally canceled a policy.) If this isn't a scam, I dont know what is. My policy that I received never said anything in regards to fees to cancel but my original paperwork said short rate basis, which to them is a fee. AGAIN, my policy said nothing about a FEE in the cancellation section or anywhere else. They play on words and semantics. Customer service is rude and they talk over you. Shaq has put himself with a horrible company.

Allstate scored in the middle of the pack in J.D. Power’s 2018 Auto Insurance Study (mostly due to its higher premiums), but we’d still recommend it over The General. It dwarfs The General when it comes to discounts and supplemental coverage — meaning that going with The General’s cheaper sticker price doesn’t actually guarantee that you’ll pay less.

This supplemental option provides protection for any custom parts you may have installed in your vehicle, like grilles, stereo systems, paint jobs, or spoilers. If you elect to purchase this coverage, The General will pay for the cost of replacing these parts after an accident (which aren’t usually included under a standard insurance policy). That said, The General does have a limit on custom equipment coverage: In California, the limit is $1,500, and in every other state, it’s $5,000.

There is no sign of any of the more common trends in auto insurance such as accident forgiveness, although again, that’s not surprising considering the target market for The General auto insurance.
After 6 months of coverage they raised my rate from $742 to $1018. I received a bill saying had to pay $820.49 by December 28th 2019 to keep insurance till June 2019. I paid $820.49 on December 27th 2019. Found a better & cheaper policy on January 7th 2019. Called The General to cancel. The customer service rep stated I would get back $45. They charged me $775 for 10 days of insurance. The customer service rep stated NY state approves these practices.
I've had State Farm my whole life and they have always done right by me. On April 10, 2009 my home was destroyed by a tornado. Amidst all the turmoil, the traffic, and the inability to call anyone... I was finally able to reach my agent around midnight to report my claim. The next morning I went to the location of my destroyed home around 8 am to find my agent was already there with a check in hand to keep me on my feet. My agent and claims team found me a town home to stay in, fully furnished it with supplies and furniture, and allowed me to stay there until the construction on my new home was complete. All the while, tending to my every need and resolving any complications or worries I had very quickly.
The General, under Permanent General Companies, Inc., is BBB accredited and has been since 2005. The website gives the company an A+ rating. There are a total of 176 complaints against the company in the past three years, with 64 of those complaints closed in the past 12 months. Those numbers are a little high, but not alarming for a company of this size. There are no government actions or other major problems listed.

I was with AAA for the longest time in my life, promised to lower my premium, but when it was time to put out they said that's our best price for 2 cars and my home around 2k. I called AARP ( Hartford insurance) and they gave me a price of $1,200 LOTS of savings for the same coverage. Then I had one car left and wanted a price from AAA $3,200 just for 1 car and Hartford $740. Are these insurance for real! Apparently only Hartford is not greedy FOR THE SAME COVERAGE. When I had an accident about 5 months ago (not my fault) State Farm had a max coverage of 25K in Vegas ( you guys watch out for this) was told to get the initial sum from Hartford -NO PROBLEM very nice and followed up all my problems. My advice all you 50 year olds try and contact Hartford and ask, you have nothing to lose.

The General also has some red flags when it comes to its financial solvency. While A.M. Best awards an “Excellent” financial strength rating to The General's parent company, American Family Insurance, The General itself isn't rated by agencies like like S&P Global and Moody’s. In fact, it has no ratings of its own — from any agency. The Insurance Information Institute recommends choosing providers with multiple financial strength evaluations, so this complete lack of evaluation gave us pause. While The General may still have the ability to pay out on claims, it isn’t backed with the same confidence as companies with many financial strength ratings.
Had this company for years including coverage for my 21 Year son...not an easy feat to get reasonable prices, complete consideration by all employees and real people who meet all our needs when it really counts. Example..my son was in a total loss accident when hit (hit and run) on a busy freeway. He had minor physical injuries but Wawanesa came through providing everything we needed! We love Wawanesa.
The underinsured motorist coverage works similarly, but it would only pay out when you get hit by someone who does have auto insurance, but your bodily injury damages that they caused are more than they carry, leaving them underinsured. Just like your bodily injury, the UMPD would pay to fix the damage to your car caused by the other driver, and you only have to pay the $250 deductible.
