Hi Eric – What you’ve seen is not an unusual situation. A company that’s good in one state isn’t in another. Liberty Mutual worked for you in California, but not in Florida. This is why it’s not possible to say one company is the best. That will vary by state and by your own personal profile. I just switched from State Farm to Nationwide and State Farm was reasonable, though I wasn't necessarily happy with the coverage. It was only $79 a month for full coverage, but they didn't have accident forgiveness, if I got into an accident, I would have to pay 20% of the rental fee for a car, and the lowest deductible for collision they will go is $250. I switched to Nationwide a week ago and the quote was for $70 a month, (every little bit counts) but the big difference is the coverage. I got accident forgiveness included, also they pay 100% of car rental fee, and I only have $100 deductible for collision. However they do have $0 deductible but 100 I can do. This is for a 2011 Ford Focus which Focuses are generally cheap to insure.

Do not, I repeat, do not get this coverage. They hide fees from you, make changes without your consent and will keep ALL of your money when you cancel. I got a quote, paid the downpayment and 4 days later found better, cheaper coverage. Contacted the general as I still had required paperwork that needed to be submitted and was told I would get a full refund. I got $15 back out of my $296 payment. For 13 days of coverage (because that's when they finally canceled a policy.) If this isn't a scam, I dont know what is. My policy that I received never said anything in regards to fees to cancel but my original paperwork said short rate basis, which to them is a fee. AGAIN, my policy said nothing about a FEE in the cancellation section or anywhere else. They play on words and semantics. Customer service is rude and they talk over you. Shaq has put himself with a horrible company.
This insurance company should be labeled “SCAM”. My daughter has full coverage but when she tried to file a claim last week she was told she would have to pay for the repairs on her car herself because she didn’t have the license number of the hit and run driver that struck her. Because she applied online she doesn’t have collision insurance or some such crap. My advice “STAY AWAY FROM THE GENERAL”.

They have also falsified communications - no verbal contact with me occurred, yet in the system I spoke to their representative twice. I got a quote, paid the whole amount the same day. General increased the premium 3 weeks later saying they did receive the document they need. If this isn't a scam, I don't know what is!

DO NOT GET THIS INSURANCE! BEWARE! I got the General Insurance in Feb 2018 and paid $198/month. It was affordable and everything was great UNTIL I HAD AN ACCIDENT in November 2018. The adjuster was RUDE to everyone, including the Auto Body shop, refused to return calls and hung up on people. My claim was then transferred to a 2nd Adjuster mid-process and I NEVER received any calls at all from the 2nd guy. The only communication I got from him was via mail.
I've been with them a year and we have now switched. Our policy had lapsed so we paid the past due, got caught up, and thought we were good. NOPE. Found out in April that my license was suspended! Why? Because the General didn't bother reporting to the state that I was insured! Had to pay to get reinstated. So we have a jeep that stopped working. My husband called to have it dropped. Apparently they dropped my car as well. I just got pulled over earlier for not having insurance! My husband has been paying them. I now have to get my license reinstated AGAIN!
Switching to Amica from State Farm because I reviewed my State Farm policy and found that they are no longer paying to return my vehicle to "pre-loss" condition, and instead they are only paying for what is competative in the market area. I have been with State Farm for over 12 years, and recently read my policy booklet, and found this out. Based on the way State Farm's auto policies read I am very unhappy. State Farm gets to dictate what is competative in the market area, and because the majority of the shops in my area are not good shops, State Farm will not pay to have my vehicle repaired properly because it isn't competative in the market area as my policy reads. This also means that if I hit someone and they take their vehicle to a quality shop and State Farm does not pay for the cost to repair the other party's vehicle properly, then I can be sued by the person I hit. I have had a pretty positive experience with this company until I went to renew my 3 car tags just to find out that the registration lady have been cancelled due to non verification of insurance. I call numerous times only to get an incompetent person to send me the Letter of Experience instead of The State of Alabama Tag office. In total I called 12 times and I received 12 letters that weren’t even supposed to be sent to me. Since I couldn’t get my insurance company to verify, even though I had all the proof, I received a fine of $200 per car plus the cost of my tags.
So I canceled my insurance on 9/14/2018, I paid $491 I canceled the same day after I made the payment because I found cheaper insurance. Within the same day of my cancelation, the General said they couldn’t give me my money back. When I called, the agent was very rude and said I wouldn’t get my money back and that I owed $28 to them still. They said that it was my balance after cancelation. What should I do and who should I contact to get my $491 back?

I had gotten The General Insurance because it was cheaper! Big mistake! I was recently in an accident and when I claimed it nothing was wrong and they processed the claim! A week later after they had gotten the police report and had done the estimate we were told it was being processed and someone would be in contact! Not only did I have to call the person handling the claim numerous time to find out any information on it I had to call after I had not heard anything from the about the claim. I was then told that our insurance lapsed the day of the accident. I paid every month on the same date the 27th.

I love GEICO, they have EXCELLENT customer service! They are always great, they're always so personal, they are always there to help all day and night and weekends and you don't have to worry about someone being on vacation or sick because there's always more and great agents there to help. Plus they work with other outside companies and you can get discounts other places just for being with them. I just wanted to say I think GEICO is worth calling and getting a quote if you don't already have a policy.
I've had travelers for over thirty years. My insurance agent a few years ago left a message on my answering machine that I should give her a call and I might be able to save money on my insurance. And my insurance went down by over 1/3 of the cost. This year I had my all my policies starting the same date - my auto insurance is now for a year instead of two six month terms and I saved money on the year policy!
Being in the business for a very long time, I have found that most people are clueless about insurance, even most agents who sell them. I will agree that their rates are cheap. But I wouldn’t recommend them. Inexperienced adjusters. They do not fully investigate. The policy does not cover like, kind, and quality which is bad if you have a new vehicle.

I was in an automobile accident on 12/27/17. Hit in a parking lot by a girl doing about 50, insured by Permanent General. The accident was 100% her fault as admitted by everybody involved. I submitted a claim to her insurance company and was given an adjusted named {Redacted]. Permanent General then proceeded to have my car towed to a salvage yard one hour and 20 minutes away from where it was. This company [Redacted] lost my only set of car keys. This lost keys delayed my auto body shop from estimating my vehicle. A new set of keys had to be created and a locksmith had to re-key my car. The General had the nerve to blame this delay on the auto body shop and ordered me to return my rental car before any repairs were even authorized to be completed. I left 3 voicemail messages for [Redacted]’s supervisor [Redacted] in regards to needing a rental vehicle until my vehicle was repaired. She did not return one of my phone calls. I did not get to speak to her until I called the claims line and refused to be put into voicemail and held for 25 minutes. Her response was to bad for me. Again they went back and forth on repairs until Friday 1/26, 30 days after my accident, when [Redacted] stated that they would not be paying any repairs and I would have to subjugate through my insurance company. Do not use this company for your insurance. Go through Statefarm, Geico, one of the real insurance companies. This is the worst company I have ever dealt with, horrible customer service and these people just do not care. If you get jerked around from this company as I have, submit a complaint through the BBB and through Division of Finance. Maybe with enough complaints, we can put this company out of business. I have now filed a claim with my insurance company.
I had Allstate for over 20 years and it just kept going up. I would contact my agent to see if anything could be saved and they would adjust it slightly each year, but it was over $200 per month and I had a perfect driving record, and my vehicles were getting older and older. Finally I was fed up and got quotes from nearly a dozen insurers and Esurance beat them all, lowering my payments by more than HALF! Now I'm worried, though, since Allstate has now purchased Esurance. Will my rates start to go up and up again? Time will tell.
The underinsured motorist coverage works similarly, but it would only pay out when you get hit by someone who does have auto insurance, but your bodily injury damages that they caused are more than they carry, leaving them underinsured. Just like your bodily injury, the UMPD would pay to fix the damage to your car caused by the other driver, and you only have to pay the $250 deductible.
